VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 03-2014
Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

January 17, 2014, 00:06 UTC (January 17, 2014, 12:06 KST)

KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-27-)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Explosive-extrusive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A new lava dome continues to extrude on the north-western part of the old lava dome, moderate ash explosions up to 13,100-16,400 ft (4-5 km) a.s.l., fumarolic activity and incandescence of the dome summit and hot avalanches accompanies this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the lava dome all week. Ash plumes rose up to 19,700 ft (6 km) and extended about 68 mi (110 km) to the east-north-east of the volcano on January 10. Ash explosions sent ash up to 26,200-29,500 ft (8-9 km) a.s.l. on January 12, and ash plumes extended about 248 mi (400 km) to the south-west of the volcano on January 12 and 13.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-13-)
54.05 N, 159.44 E; Elevation 4874 ft (1486 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

There was not registering seismic activity of the volcano by technical reasons. Strombolian and Vulcanian activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data showed a bright thermal anomaly over the volcano all week.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-25-)
55.97 N, 160.6 E; Elevation 9453 ft (2882 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Moderate activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

Seismicity of the volcano was weak. Video data showed a moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano. Satellite data showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano or the volcano was obscured by clouds.

PLOSKY TOLBACHIK VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-24-)
55.83 N, 160.39 E; Elevation 10119 ft (3085 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Moderate activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A weak seismic activity of the volcano continues. A thermal anomaly was observed on satellite images at the northern area of Tolbachinsky Dol all week.

GORELY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-07-)
52.56 N, 158.03 E; Elevation 5996 ft (1828 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Moderate activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

Weak and moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues. Weak gas-steam activity of the volcano was observing or the volcano was obscured by clouds.

In Russia, KVERT, on behalf of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS, is responsible for providing information on volcanic activity to international air navigation services for the airspace users.

KVERT scientists was available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) 7 days in week and by phone during the evenings since 2005. KVERT analyses daily satellite imagery (since 2002 till now); information from remote scientific observation stations; real-time seismic data for 11 Kamchatkan volcanoes (data from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS); and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
