KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 22-2020
Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity

May 28, 2020, 22:41 UTC (May 29, 2020, 10:41 KST)

KVERT monitor active volcanoes of Kamchatka and the Kurile Islands. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #300270)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE

The explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumarolic activity sometimes with some amount of ash, and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanie this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano all week.

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO (CAVW #300260)
56.06 N, 160.64 E; Elevation 15580 ft (4750 m)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE

A moderate explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700-23,000 ft (6-7 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A moderate explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues, the Strombolian and gas-steam activity with some amount of ash was observing all week. The lava flow continues to move along Apakhonchich chute on the southeastern volcanic flank. Satellite data showed a large bright thermal anomaly in an area of the volcano all week; on 22 and 25-28 May, gas-steam plumes containing some amount of ash extended for 200 km to the eastern directions of the volcano.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300130)
54.05 N, 159.44 E; Elevation 4874 ft (1486 m)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE

A moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 16,400-23,000 ft (5-7 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A moderate explosive activity of the volcano continues. According to satellite data, ash plumes and clouds drifted for 185 km to the southeast and southwest of the volcano on 24, 26 and 28 May; a thermal anomaly over the volcano on 23 and 25-28 May was observed.

EBEKO VOLCANO (CAVW #290380)
50.69 N, 156.01 E; Elevation 3792 ft (1156 m)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE

A moderate activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk.

A moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 4.6 km a.s.l. all week; ash clouds drifted to the eastern directions of the volcano; ashfalls were noted at Severo-Kurilsk on 22 and 24 May. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano on 21 May; an ash cloud drifted for 60 km to the southeast of the volcano.

In Russia, KVERT, on behalf of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FEB RAS, is responsible for providing information on volcanic activity to international air navigation services for the airspace users.

KVERT scientists are available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) 7 days in week and by phone during the evenings since 2005. KVERT produces daily satellite monitoring (since 2002 till now) of Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanoes to using the information system (IS) “Remote monitoring of the activity of Kamchatka and Kuriles volcanoes (VolSatView)”, which was created in 2011-2014 the joint efforts of the scientists of KVERT IVS FEB RAS, the Space Research Institute RAS, the Computing Center FEB RAS and the Far Eastern Scientific Center Planet. IS continues to evolve. KVERT analyses information from remote scientific observation stations and seismic data for volcanoes: Alaid, Avachinsky, Bezymianny, Gorely, Karymsky, Kizimen, Klyuchevskoy, Koryaksky, Mutnovsky, Plosky Tolbachik, Sheveluch, Ushkovsky, Zhupanovsky (from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS); and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanoes.
